How do manual and electric chain hoists differ?

Both lift loads via a load chain running over a chain wheel. In a manual chain hoist the operator pulls a hand chain, and a gearbox with a load-pressure brake multiplies the effort. In an electric chain hoist, a motor with slip clutch or frequency inverter does the lifting from a pendant control.

The hand hoist is low-maintenance, mains-independent and cheap to buy. The electric hoist lifts faster, without fatigue and precisely - but it needs a power supply and a duty cycle matched to how often it runs.

The duty cycle (ED) per FEM/ISO states what share of an hour the motor may run under load, e.g. 40 % ED of 60 min = 24 min of operation. Exceed it and the motor overheats.

Which figures drive the choice of drive?

Four factors decide: lift height, load capacity, lift frequency and duty cycle. The heavier the load and the more frequent the lift, the more clearly the numbers favour the electric hoist.

  • Load above 250‑500 kg: hand power becomes uneconomical, the electric hoist relieves the operator.
  • Large lift height: pulling many metres of hand chain costs time and effort - the motor wins here.
  • High lift frequency in a cycle: the electric hoist prevents fatigue and mishandling.
  • Short, rare lifts at changing locations: the mains-independent hand hoist stays ahead.
  • Check the duty cycle: continuous work needs a higher ED class (e.g. 40‑60 % ED).
Rule of thumb: heavy + often + high = electric. Rare, mobile and no power = manual chain hoist. For occasional heavy lifts, an electric hoist with a low ED class can suffice.

What about safety, maintenance and inspection?

Both hoist types fall under the Machinery Directive and the German DGUV Rule 54 (and DGUV principle 309‑001). Lifting gear must be inspected at least yearly by a competent person, checking the load chain and hook for wear and elongation.

  • Overload protection: slip clutch or load limiter on the electric hoist, slip hub optional on the manual one.
  • Emergency stop and end-of-travel cut-off are mandatory on the electric hoist.
  • Clean and lubricate the load chain regularly, check discard limits per DIN.
  • Keep an inspection log and document every recurring check.
For the electric hoist always pick the right protection class (e.g. IP54/IP55) and mains voltage (230 V / 400 V). In explosive zones, spark-reduced manual hoists or Ex-rated electric hoists are required.

As a guide, from about 250 to 500 kg or with frequent lifts. Above that, manual pulling becomes tiring and slow, so the electric drive saves time and relieves operators.

What does the duty cycle (ED) mean on an electric hoist?

The ED states how long the motor may run under load per hour. 40 % ED means 24 minutes of operation per 60 minutes. For cyclic work choose a high ED class, otherwise the motor overheats.

When is the manual chain hoist the better choice?

For rare lifts, moderate loads up to around 500 kg, changing sites without power and in simple workshops. It is cheap, low-maintenance and ready to use instantly.

How often must chain hoists be inspected?

Per DGUV at least once a year by a competent person, more often under heavy use. Load chain, hook and brake are checked for wear and recorded in the inspection log.
