How do you select and load heavy-duty shelving correctly?

Heavy-duty shelving only carries its rated weight safely when shelf load and bay load match the goods stored. Upright height and depth, the number of levels, adequate bracing and floor anchoring all decide stability. This guide explains the key figures and correct load distribution.

Which key figures decide the selection?

Two load ratings matter most: the shelf load per level and the bay load per shelving bay. Both appear on the load sign and must never be exceeded. Upright height, depth, the number of levels and the bracing then determine stability together.

The shelf load states how much a single level may carry, the bay load the total across all levels of one bay. Height and depth must suit the goods: deeper uprights (600‑1,000 mm) carry pallets and bulky parts, shallower ones (400‑500 mm) suit cartons and bins.

Always size the shelf load with reserve: plan for the heaviest realistic load, not the average.

How do you secure bracing and floor anchoring?

Stability comes from diagonal and horizontal bracing in the uprights and from anchoring to the floor. Tall or narrow racks tip over without bracing and anchor bolts. Above a height-to-depth ratio greater than 5:1, floor anchoring is mandatory.

  • Fit diagonal and horizontal braces in every upright frame, never omit braces
  • Anchor racks with bolts once the height-to-depth ratio exceeds 5:1
  • Couple free-standing runs with connectors or secure them to the wall
  • Lay shelf panels flat over the full area and lock them against lift-out
Runs with a high impact risk need column guards on the corner frames so a forklift contact does not compromise stability.

How do you load the rack and tell it from light shelving?

Load heavy goods low and light goods high so the centre of gravity stays low. Spread the weight evenly across the level instead of concentrating it on one side. One load sign per bay documents shelf load and bay load in a permanently visible way.

The difference from light shelving lies in capacity and build: light shelving usually carries 50‑150 kg per level for cartons and small parts. Heavy-duty shelving uses stronger profiles, thicker panels and bolted or clip-in frames for 150‑300 kg and more per level.
