In thermal transfer printing the printhead melts the ink coating of a ribbon onto the label. That coating decides how rugged the print becomes: wax is soft and melts at low energy, resin forms a chemically bonded, highly durable film, and wax-resin sits in between as a blend.
The higher the resin content, the more scratch- and chemical-resistant the image - but the more heat the printhead needs and the smoother the label surface must be. So the ribbon class must always match the label material, not only the durability you want.
Which ribbon for which stress?
Three load types decide the choice: smudge resistance (abrasion from handling), scratch resistance (mechanical rubbing, transport) and chemical resistance (oils, solvents, cleaners). Depending on the mix, a different ribbon class wins.
- Wax: the cheapest class, ideal for shipping, carton and warehouse labels with a short life.
- Wax-resin: a solid compromise for occasional abrasion or light moisture.
- Resin: for rating plates, chemical, automotive and laboratory labels that must survive solvents, heat or rubbing.
- Plastic labels (PET, PP, polyimide) almost always require resin, because wax will not bond durably to a smooth film.
How do you set up printing and storage?
Resin-rich ribbons need a higher burn temperature (heat) and often a lower print speed so the film transfers cleanly. Wax ribbons, by contrast, smear at the edges if the heat is too high. The printhead lasts longer when ribbon and stock are matched to each other.
- Match burn temperature to the class: low for wax, high for resin.
- Choose ribbon width equal to or slightly larger than the label to protect the printhead.
- Store ribbons dry at 5‑35 °C and below 80 % relative humidity.
- Keep leftovers cool and out of light so the ink coating does not stick together.
Frequently asked questions
When is a plain wax ribbon enough?
For paper and carton labels with a short life, such as shipping, address or warehouse labels. Wax is cheap and smudge-resistant, but not scratch- or chemical-proof.
Why do PET and PP almost always need resin?
Soft wax ink does not bond durably to smooth plastic film. Resin cross-links into a hard film that stays put and survives rubbing, heat and solvents.
What is best against chemicals and oils?
Resin ribbon is the most resistant to solvents, oils and cleaners. Wax-resin tolerates light contact, while plain wax smears under even mild abrasion.
Does the printer temperature need adjusting?
Yes. Resin-rich ribbons need a higher burn temperature and usually lower speed, whereas wax ribbons need less heat or the edges smear.
