What are the four sign categories?
Safety signs are grouped into four basic categories by shape and colour. The combination of geometric shape, safety colour and standardised pictogram makes the message clear without text and across language barriers.
Prohibition signs are round, red with a black symbol and a red diagonal bar. Warning signs are yellow triangles with a black border and symbol. Mandatory signs are blue circles with a white symbol, and emergency (rescue) signs are green rectangles with a white symbol. Fire safety signs complete the set in red.
How do ISO 7010 and ASR A1.3 relate?
ISO 7010 defines the standardised pictograms across Europe. Each sign carries a unique code such as P002 (no smoking), W012 (electrical hazard), M009 (wear protective gloves) or E002 (emergency exit). In Germany the technical rule ASR A1.3 makes these signs binding for workplaces.
When you mark up a site today, use only the current ISO 7010 pictograms. Old signs from the former BGV A8 should not be mixed with new ones, because inconsistent symbols slow down fast recognition in an emergency.
- P codes: prohibition signs, for example P003 no open flame.
- W codes: warning signs, for example W001 general hazard.
- M codes: mandatory signs, for example M004 wear eye protection.
- E codes: rescue signs, for example E003 first aid.
- F codes: fire safety signs, for example F001 fire extinguisher.
Which sign belongs in which area?
Selection follows the actual hazard of the area. Escape routes and emergency exits, first aid and fire safety equipment, and zones with special hazards must be clearly marked.
When are photoluminescent signs required?
Rescue and fire safety signs along escape routes must remain visible even if the lighting fails. Photoluminescent signs store light and glow in the dark, with performance classes governed by DIN 67510.
Afterglow luminance is stated in mcd/m² and measured over time. Common classes are, for example, 140/20 mcd/m² after 10 and 60 minutes, or higher classes for long escape routes. Sufficient charging by the existing lighting is essential.
- Prefer photoluminescent versions for escape route and exit signs.
- Mark the location of extinguishers and fire alarms photoluminescently too.
- Ensure adequate charging by ambient light before installation.
- Choose the DIN 67510 class to match the length and importance of the route.

Is ISO 7010 mandatory in Germany?
The ISO 7010 pictograms become binding for workplaces through the technical rule ASR A1.3. New markings must therefore use the ISO 7010 form.
Which colour is used for rescue signs?
Rescue and escape route signs are green with a white symbol. Under ISO 3864‑1 green always signals safety, rescue or a safe condition.
When do I need photoluminescent signs?
Along escape and rescue routes and at fire safety equipment, photoluminescent signs to DIN 67510 are advisable so they stay visible during a power failure.
Can I mix old and new signs?
No. Within a site you should switch consistently to ISO 7010, as mixed symbol sets hinder fast recognition in an emergency.
