Film thickness is measured in microns (µm) and depends on load weight, edge sharpness and stack stability. Hand films are typically 17 to 23 µm and machine films 20 to 35 µm. Thin high-performance films with strong pre-stretch often replace much thicker standard film.
Light, stable loads up to about 400 kg manage with thin film. Heavy pallets, sharp edges or unstable stacks call for more thickness or a tear-resistant power film with high stretch capacity.
What is pre-stretch and why does it save material?
Pre-stretch is how far the film elongates as it is applied. A pre-stretch of 200 % means 1 metre of film becomes 3 metres. The higher the pre-stretch, the more area one metre of raw film covers, and the lower the material use per pallet.
- Hand film: only about 10 to 30 % pre-stretch is possible by muscle power.
- Machine film: 150 to 300 %, controlled by the wrapper's pre-stretch unit.
- Higher pre-stretch increases the recovery force and therefore load stability.
- Over-stretching an unsuitable film causes necking and tears.
Hand film or machine film - which suits you?
The choice depends on pallet volume. Up to roughly 15 to 20 pallets per day, hand film with a dispenser is economical. Above that throughput a wrapping machine with machine film clearly cuts cost, time and physical strain.
